Markha Valley incl. Baby Trek



Duration : 23 Days / 10 Days trek including acclimatization trek / Grade : difficult / Best season : Mid May to Early September / Trek & Cultural Tour

During this trek, you take in spectacular views of the Mighty Himalaya, Ladakh and Zanskar ranges. You will cross two high pass at elevations up to 5150m. Trails wind pass willow groves, alongside patches of wild roses and through canyons beautified with multi-colored prayer flags flapping the breeze. You have opportunity to meet nomadic families as they herd their yaks, sheep, goats and other animals and a visit to a small monastery where butter lamps are lit in morning and evening by an elderly nun leave indelible impressions of your journey through this gloriously illuminated landscape. The highlight of the trek is the camping at the base of Kangyatse massif peak (6400m) dominating the wonderful meadows of Nimaling.



Day 1: Arrive Delhi

Day 2 : Flight Delhi – Leh

Days 3 & 4 : Acclimatization days 

Day 5 : Acclimatization day with visits Royal Palace, Monastery & Shanti Stupa 


Day 6 : Likir – Yangtang

Day 7 : Yangtang – Hemis Shukpachan

Day 8 : Hemis Shukpachan – Temisgam

Day 9 : Drive to Lamayuru (2hrs) + monastery visit

Day 10 : return to Leh

Day 11 : Leh rest 


Day 12 : Drive Leh – Spituk – Trek from Zingchen to Rumbok (5/6 hrs)

Day 13 : Trek Rumbok – Yurutse (4200m) (4/5hrs)

Day 14 : Yurutse – Gandala (4900m) – Shingo (5/6 hrs) 

Day 15 : Trek Shingo – Markha (8/9 hrs)

Day 16 : Trek Markha – Hanker – Thachungtse (6 hrs)

Day 17 : Trek Thachungtse – Nimaling (4 hrs)

Day 18 : Trek Nimaling – Kongmaru-la (5175m) – Shangsumdo (6/7 hrs)

Day 19 : Drive Shangsumdo – Hemis – Shey – Thiksey – Leh (58 km)

Day 20, 21 : Rest in Leh

Day 22 : Departure to Delhi

Day 23 : Delhi & departure


Day 1: Arrive Delhi

Arrive Delhi, transfer to hotel for few hours.


Day 2: Flight Delhi – Leh

Transfer to domestic Airport for fly to Leh. Arrive Leh, transfer to hotel. Day is at complete leisure to get you fully acclimatize with the altitude of Ladakh. Evening explore Leh Bazar. Overnight at TSETAN GUESTHOUSE in Leh. (3500 m)

Days 3, 4 & 5 : Acclimatization days 



Day 6 : Leh – Likir – Yangtang (4-5hrs)

We start the Day early in the morning from the Leh. It is 2 hours drive from Leh to Likir following the Indus River. Likir gompa situated atop a windy cliff top overlooking the beautiful village of Likir, This Monastery is headed by the younger brother of Dalai Lama. According to tradition the foundation of Likir monastery goes back 11th century when it was a Bon center. But the real foundation seem to be not earlier than 15th century. On the top on roof they have newly setup a museum which contains some very old thankas brought from Tibet and the armory, coins, seals etc.

We begin here our trek below a mountain nearby the monastery; the trek is quite easy Little ascension to the first pass then long descent to the Yangtang Village passing a very dry and stony landscape.


Day 7 :  Yangtang – Hemis Shukpachan via Rizong (6-7hrs)

Today our trek is pretty long. We walk alongside the river and trees amidst the gorge to the Rizong monastery. It is worth visiting Rizong Monastery, which is an isolated at the back of a natural amphitheatre and has 3 main rooms to visit, two with large Buddhas and the third one with a large stupa.

After visiting the gompa, we ascend gradually to the Shushut pass 4000 m. From the pass we have a view of Hemis Shukpachan as well as surrounding peaks. An easy descent towards our camp at Hemis Shukpachan takes a couple of hours. It is one of the major villages of Sham, and the name of the village is derived from the conifers (shukpa cedar or juniper).


Day 8 : Hemis Shukpachan – Timosgam (4hrs)

From Hemis Shukpachan we go onto a flat ground as far as ill-defined pass alongside the Chortens (stupas). A steep descent will lead us to the right side of the mountains and climb steadily on the slope towards the Mebtak La 3720 m.

After taking short rest and enjoying the view from the pass, we head down to the village of Ang. From Ang, we head towards the south on the dusty jeep road to the village of Tingmosgam. Timosgam is well famed for its monastery, and is perhaps the most affluent village in the sham valley for its apricots, apples, nuts and beautiful houses.


Day 9 : Timosgam – Lamayuru (2 hrs)

From Timosgam after we drive to Lamayuru where we stay for the night. Rest and visit of the Monastery.

Lamayuru is home to one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, dating back to the 10th century. Local legend has it that the place was once a lake that dried up. The village has around 100 houses scattered around the Lamayuru Monastery.

Day 10 : Lamayuru – Leh (6hrs) 

Drive back to Leh by bus

Day 11 : Recovering & rest



Day 12 : Drive to Zingchen – Trek Zingchen – Rumbok (3700m) (3/4 hrs.)

Trek along a narrow mountain valley with a tiny stream following down to Zingchen village. The trek takes you ascending up slowly along the valley until we reach the village of Rumbok where we stay for the night. View on the Stok La ; overnight in guesthouse.


Day 13 : Rumbok – Yurutse (4200m) (4/5hrs)

Leave camp after breakfast for Base of Gandala. Cross the river then gently walk up along the right side. You pass Yurutse village (one house). Overnight in guesthouse or in tent.

Day 14 : Trek Yurutse – Gandala (4900m) – Shingo (5/6 hrs)

Right from the camp, you gradually ascend to the pass. Long ascend along zigzag path as far as top of the pass. From the top, you capture spectacular and imposing view of landscape. Cross the pass then easy and gentle descent down in the valley. Reach Shingo village and spend the night in homestay.


Day 15 : Trek Shingo – Markha (8/9 hrs)

Long descent to Skiu. Little rest then continue trek along good path on the right bank of the Markha river. A great deal of greenery with full of willow, Poplar trees and see buckthorn bushes. Then on the left bank (bridge) cross a barren plain, go back onto the right bank (bridge) and then you reach at Chaluk village. Pass the village; continue towards the riverbank to cross. Cross the river then go on along the left bank. Cross the last river towards right then short and gentle climb leads you to Markha (charming village). (4280m).

Day 16 : Trek Markha – Hanker – Thachungtse (6 hrs)

Today you cross the river several times and you pass across beautiful landscape of Markha valley surrounded with huge wonderful towering mountains. Leave camp after breakfast for Thanchungtse. Follow the clear trek route along the right bank of main valley. The path is sometimes little bit difficult in the riverbed. Pass the monastery of Humlung. Then, carry on along the right bank river as far as Hankar village. Pass this charming village. The Path improves a bit beyond Hanker; leave a broad valley on the right-hand side. The valley narrow and goes higher but with panoramic landscape. Cross the river over a wooden bidge towards right then continue trek further for few meters to reach at the pasture land of Thachungtse with colonies of Marmot. (4240m)


Day 17 : Trek Thachungtse – Nimaling (4 hrs)

Leave camp after breakfast for Nimaling. The path can be seen easily from the camp. Follow the clear route and continue up along right side. Easy walk in the beginning then gradual ascend, several small incline, as far as Small Lake. The river is rather far to the left (gorge). From the Lake, you capture the view of wonderful and enchanting view of snow clad Kangyatse massif peak (6400m). pass the lake, then continue easy trek by following path across lunar landscape of barren terrain as far as Nimaling that is one of the most enchanting and marvelous high valley in Ladakh ( 4700m) dominated by the spectacular Kangyatse massif(6400m). Here you find several Shepherds with their animals (Sheep, Yak, Baby Yak Cow, horse, Goat) grazing across the beautiful meadows. Afternoon, hike across Nimaling and enjoy the view of panoramic landscape of the scenic Markha valley (4740m)

Day 18 : Trek Nimaling – Kongmaru-la (5175m) – Shangsumdo (6/7 hrs)

Morning after breakfast, continue trek with crossing of stream over wooden bridge. Cross the stream then ascend gradually to the rolling ridge (like small pass). You enjoy wonderful landscape of valley with some zigzag trail up to the Kongmaru–la (5150m). Enjoy eternal awe inspiring and wonderful view of Kangyatse and enchanting Markha valley on one side, on other side marvelous and imposing view of Indus valley. Cross the pass, Steep descent down as far as campsite. Pass a campsite and continue easy and long descend down with downstream stream along the marvelous gorge. Several easy crossing of stream. Leave the gorge and keep walking on the left bank to stream as far as Chuskirmo (spring salt water). Continue trek, sometimes in the riverbed, right bank, and again on left bank. You pass across small charming village of Chokdo. Pass the village and continue easy descent down in the valley as far as charming village Shangsumdo.


Day 19 Drive Shangsumdo – Hemis – Shey – Thiksey – Leh (58 km)… and visits on the way

Hemis is the most important monastery of Ladakh, 360 years old. The gigantic Tankha, one of the largest in the world, is displayed once in 12 years. Last was in 1992.

We visit Hemis monastery, then drive to Shey Monastery. This one has a 7.5m copper statue of Buddha plated with gold, the largest of its kind. We drive to Thiksey Monastery, situated on a hill top. There are several temples and wall paintings of Buddha. Close by is the summer palace of the old raja of Leh. This monastery is 800 years old, Silver and Gold statues are seen in it.

Day 20, 21 : In Leh rest 

Day 22 : Departure to Delhi

  • If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 25% of booking value will be charged as cancellation fees.
  • If cancellations are made 15-30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of booking value will be charged as cancellation fees.
  • If cancellations are made within 0-15 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of booking value will be charged as cancellation fees.
  • In case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, certain activities may be cancelled and in such cases the operator will try his best to provide an alternate feasible activity. However no refund will be provided for the same.

  • The customer receives a confirmation voucher via email within 24 hours of successful booking
  • In case the preferred slots are unavailable, an alternate schedule of the customer’s preference will be arranged and a new confirmation voucher will be sent via email.
  • Alternatively, the customer may choose to cancel their booking and a full refund will be processed.
