Presentation

phuktal

Region : Himachal Pradesh & Zanskar (Ladakh) / Duration: 25 Days / 15 Days Trek + acclimatization / Best Season: July to September / Level : moderate to demanding

Zanskar, inaccessible for centuries, is unlike anywhere else on earth : a high arid land with fortress-like Buddhist monasteries steeped in myth and rich in imagery. It is also a world where the only way to travel is on foot or by pony. This trek takes us from the Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh into the ancient kingdom of Zanskar, where we visit the remarkable cave gompa of Phuktal. The people, the scenery and the challenge make this a truly unique adventure !

This long term and high altitude trek (5450 m) is preceded by 2 days of progressive walks upon Manali end by a short but demanding 3 days trek in Bhrigu Lake for a perfect acclimatization.

Acclimatization trek Bhrigu Lake :

bhrigu

Bhrigu (4240m) is a prominent holy lake of the Kullu Region, located right of the Rohtang pass. The Legend says that Bhrigu Rishi meditated here and many local gods of the Kullu Region took a dip in its sacred water. Most famous among them is Guru Vashisht, who traveled to the lake at least once in a two or three year’s cycle. And still today many local people from Vashist make the steep ascent to visit this holy place. A forest of Fir, Oak and in higher altitude white Oak, surrounds Gulaba from where the trek starts. Later the trek will lead through green meadows and rhododendron and there might be a good possibility of seeing some of the huge vultures which are living here.

Steep ups and downs can make you a bit tired but are equally rewarding because of its breathtaking views of the Dhaula Dhar Range with high snow-covered mountains.

Day 5 : Manali to Gulaba then trek to Raualikholi (3770 m) 4-5 hrs uphill

We drive 15km up to the Manali Rohtang highway to the meadows of Gulaba. The views of the upper Kullu Valley from here are quite spectacular. The trail towards the lake goes eastward and climbs through the dense forest of Deodar. We will cross a small stream to the idyllic camp site of Kothi Theli.

Day 6 : Raualikholi to Bhrigu (4268 m) to Panduropa (3450 m) 5-6 hours

We ascent towards the lake slowly as the altitude can make us a little breathless. We cross a mountain stream and then keep climbing till we cross a mountain ridge beyond which lies the Bhrigu Lake. After having taken Lunch here we will ascent down towards our next campsite. From here we will have breathtaking views of the Himalayan Mountains.

Day 7 : Panduropa (3450m) to Vashisht village then to Manali 4hrs downhill

Steep descent to the village Vashisht. Great view of the entire Kullu Valley. Walk through forest and slowly emerge into apple orchards and finally reach Vashisht … opposite Manali
